Grade 1 listed building roof replacement, Cumbria

The brief:

To replace the roof structure and create a new roof on a unique Grade 1 listed building in the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, which lies between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

Time on site:

The project required specialist skills, careful planning due to limited access to the building, and adherence to listed buildings consent followed by a listed buildings department inspection of the completed work. The whole project lasted 10 weeks.

Work carried out:

Although the building needed a new roof and structure, we prioritised sustainability by using as much of the existing slate as possible. We also used specialist joinery skills to replace the stunning oak beams in the roof structure. The large gable end was repointed using nhl5 hydraulic lime, which was specified in the listed building consent.

On jobs like this it is so important to respect the local vernacular as well as the character of the listed building itself, so we were thrilled to be able to use a locally-sourced Westmorland Green slate whilst doing just that.
